Confluence is defined as "a coming or flowing together, meeting or gathering at a common point." The Merrick is situated in the midst of what is often referred to as the "tri-state" area of Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia, "a stone's throw" from the Beaver River, the first major tributary of the Ohio past its beginning at Pittsburgh's iconic "Point." This area, once the western frontier in the early days of our nation, has been one of confluences, interconnections and conflations ever since.
